FUNDAMENTALS

Basketball coach John MacLeod once said, “The most critical are the least knowledgeable.” Boy was he on point.

Anyone who thinks Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell is to blame for the Lions 34-31 NFC championship loss to the 49ers is clueless.

If you want to blame anyone, which we really shouldn’t but that’s what society likes to do, how about the guy that dropped two passes?

But later for that, I’m not blaming anyone. You win as a team and lose as a team. The Lions are relevant. They have improved. The arrow is pointing up. Campbell has done a tremendous job in his three years in Detroit.

Thoughts from the game:

Barry Sanders and Joe Montana were in the house.

Nick Bosa of the 49ers wears the Michael Jordan cleats.

Rodrigo had a sweet pick in the 2nd quarter for the Lions.

Lions were up 24-7 at the half.

FOX has 6 guys on their pre and post game shows. That’s way too many. Michael Strahan was the only guy that picked the Lions to win.

The game was played in San Fran – Ford Field in Detroit had 35,000 fans watching the game on the big video board.

Look-a-likes: 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and Travis Barker.

FOX showed clips from the 49ers-Lions meeting in 1983 divisional playoff game. FOX announcer said it was Barry Sanders scoring a touchdown. No, it was Billy Sims.

The value of every possession is critical.” -Greg Olsen of FOX sports.

Johnny Point Spread took the Lions plus 7.

Why so much hate for Taylor Swift? What has she done that’s so wrong. Shake it off baby, shake it off.

Detroit Pistons beat the OKC Thunder Sunday afternoon, 120-104. Jalen Duren had 22 points, 21 rebounds and 6 assists. They did it without Cade Cunningham.

Camp Darryl from Kalamazoo reminded me that in 1993, 19 players in the NBA avergaed 20 points or more per game. This year there are 45 players averaging 20+ per game.

UConn crushed Xavier 99-56.

Zach Edey went over the 2,000 point mark this past weekend. He becomes just the 6th player in Big Ten history to score 2 grand and have over 1,000 boards. The others? Trayce Jackson-Davis, Ethan Happ, Herb Williams, Joe Barry Carroll, and Greg Kelser.

RIP former Christ the King high school girls basketball coach Vincent Cannizzaro. He was 82.

Great quote from Dan Campbell on the Lions equipment manager:

REVERSE THE BALL

Someone help me out. What has happened to Louisville (6-13, 1-7) DePaul (3-16, 0-8) Georgetown (8-12, 1-8) and Michigan (7-12, 2-6)? I’ll even throw the University of Detroit in there. Titans haven’t won a game all year. They’re 0-21.

Yo Candace Parker, you need to do your homework. Your recent comments abut Jalen Brunson were way off. She said this on TNT:

“When the game slows down in the playoffs, and you get jammed up, we’ve seen Jalen Brunson in the playoffs with the [Mavericks], and he was No. 2, No. 3, came in, played minutes, supplemented Luka [Doncic] handling the ball, but as a No. 1 option last year in the playoffs, great first round, second round not so much.”

But wait a minute, I watched the Heat series last year (2nd round) Brunson did well. Better than the first round actually vs Cleveland. Against Miami, Brunson put up 31 points, 5.5 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game. In the first round his numbers were 24 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. What are we doing here?

Sherrone Moore taking over at Michigan. Good hire by admin. But be warned, being an assistant coach is nothing like being the head man in charge.

This interview with Marcin Gortat is very good. https://hoopshype.com/lists/marcin-gortat-randy-wittman-was-the-only-coach-that-was-able-to-control-john-wall/

The two questions/answers were very interesting:

What creates this tight-knit community among European players, even beyond their active playing days?

We have similar cultures. That shows who we are; we have the same values, culture, and jokes, and we can spot the same issue or situation in a room. For example, you have one of the guys walking into the locker room with a golden grill and shiny diamonds, and he steps in, smiling all over the place. Everybody else thinks it is normal. Then all of a sudden me, Jan Vesely, or Tomáš Satoranský, “We’re sitting here looking at this like, what is this? This guy looks like a clown. He’s wearing gold diamond teeth. It’s ridiculous.” Next, you see an African-American coach walking in with his super baggy clothes. I’m talking about a potato bag hanging on him as a suit, and we’re looking at him, like, “What the hell is this?” We all crack jokes, like “You could make three suits out of this material; why would you make this suit? You look like an idiot in this suit.” So, we see those differences. We, as European guys, can spot a lot of things the same way. And we can catch a lot of things the same way we speak about when Americans talk about Sunday football, weekend Premier League games, or Barcelona-Real Madrid games, so we just have a different culture and different values and different things that are interesting for us.

Do you think social media is a problem?

The world is obsessed with social media. You have Twitch, and being a streamer, YouTuber, influencer, and basketball player, now, want all these things. How is this possible? Go to a basketball practice when you have them doing TikToks, Instagram, Twitter, and all these other social media that you have to post something. Do you want to become a basketball player? Of course, it is a huge distraction. The first thing you do in practice is record stuff. Why would you do that? How about you focus on practicing your left hand [dribbling]? I am a witness to that; before kids start bouncing the ball into practice, the first thing they do is record stuff around. They’re recording everything; they think that taking pictures with a ball. How about you dribble that ball first before you take a picture? That’s what’s happening right now.

Luka Doncic dropped 73 points on the Hawks Friday night. 25-33 FG. 8-13 from distance. 15-16 from the free-throw line. 10 rebounds, 7 assists. He was a +13 leading Dallas to the 148-143 win.

Devin Booker had 62 points Friday night but the Suns lost to the Pacers, 133-131.

Clippers started the season 3-7. They are now 29-14.

Illinois went to Northwestern the other night and Wildcat fans chanted, “Guilty!” each time Terrance Shannon touched the ball.

UCLA vs USC tonight. Both teams are 8-11.

Tarleton State is D-1 in men’s basketball. They’re a member of the WAC but you already knew that, right? Quick, where are they located?

A.P. from Brooklyn sent me a list of the top ranked players from New York State. Kareem Abdul-Jabber is 1, Dolph Schayes 2, Bob Cousy 3. We can all agree that “lists” are subjective, and it’s someone’s opinion. I agree with Jabber being the best, after that, it’s anyone’s guess.

Have a great weekend.

Go Lions!

THE COACH

In his magnificent memoir, “My Losing Season, Pat Conroy wrote, “Good coaching is good teaching and nothing else.” Boy was he right.

Being a coach is hard. Seems to be more difficult these days at all levels. Winning is hard. And for the most part, you have to win to keep your job. But here’s a twist…

Tuesday the Milwaukee Bucks fired their head coach Adrian Griffin. The former Seton Hall Pirate was in his first year as head coach for the Bucks. It was his first job after being an assistant coach in the NBA for 15 years.

Here’s the crazy thing; Milwaukee is 30-13 and in first place.

I have zero knowledge of what went down. Was a player disgruntled? Did someone complain about Griffin? Was it a possible “Mel Tucker” or “Ime Udoka” situation?

Regardless, Griffin is out of a job…for now. Someone will hire him as an assistant coach. What really blows my mind is Doc Rivers is being considered to take over for Griffin.

Big mistake.

I have never been sold on Rivers.

Give an assistant coach a chance.  Yeah, yeah, I can hear you now, “Griffin was an assistant.”  Give someone who has paid their dues over the years.  There’s a lot of good guys out there that deserve an opportunity.  Rivers has been fired three times. He’s still living off his NBA title in 2008 with the Celtics. That was 16 years ago.

“10 Outta 10” calls these types of guys, “recycled garbage.”

According to ESPN Jim Harbaugh is leaving the University of Michigan and heading to the LA Chargers.  Good for him. College coaching has turned for the worst. (High School coaching has also become a lot more difficult) Who wants to deal with chasing kids around the country and dealing with players on your current roster who want money? (NIL) Who wants to deal with the NCAA? Question in Ann Arbor now is who gets the Wolverines head job? I say give it to assistant coach Sherrone Moore.

How about Jemele Hill? I know Hill, she wrote a story about me back in the late 90’s when she wrote for the Detroit Free Press.  A tweet popped up from three years ago from Hill when Dan Campbell was hired by the Detroit Lions. This is unreal.

“This is who black coaches are losing opportunities to.”

WHAT? She has got to be kidding? This has nothing to do with the color of Campbell’s skin. And Hill is from Detroit.

I love Dan Campbell. Ever since I watched HBO’s Hard Knocks a couple of years ago and we were introduced to Campbell, his coaching staff and Lions players, how could you not like them?

Lions OL Frank Ragnow had this to say about Campbell following the Lions win over the Bucs this past Sunday:

“He’s sincere. Same guy every day.  Best leader I’ve ever been around.  He authentically loves his guys.”

By the way, Campbell has turned the Lions around and has made them relevant. Not a bad hire.

THOUGHT BUBBLE

Watched Michigan State-Maryland Sunday afternoon. Bill Raftery and Ian Eagle on the call for CBS. At the start of the game Raftery said, “The team that makes 3’s will prevail.” Terps shot 8-22, Spartans 7-16. MSU came away with the win, 61-59. Maryland committed 17 turnovers including a costly one on the last possession of the game. Terps had just 8 assists.

Back in the day, before he got into coaching, Maryland head coach Kevin Willard worked basketball camp at Michigan State. Good guy.

When I think of Maryland basketball first name that comes to mind is Albert King. In 1977, as a senior at Ft. Hamilton High School in Brooklyn, King was ranked #1 player in the country. Gene Banks was 2, Earvin Johnson was third. Speaking of Johnson, I picked up his biography written by Roland Lazenby.

Former Terp head coach Gary Williams was at the game.

MSU has made the NCAA tournament 25 straight years.

Eagle and Raftery are members of the “Captain Obvious” club. On one defensive possession Jaden Aikens of MSU stole the ball and took it in 1 on 3. Bad decision. Eagle said, “Cookies.” What does that mean?

Heard another “REF YOU SUCK!” chant. When will fans realize officials do not suck. They are very good. I say “T” up the home team when fans do that. And you wonder why there is a shortage of officials at the lower levels? Leave these guys and gals alone.

It’s time men’s college basketball goes from 2 halves to 4 quarters.

Lonnell Martin of Arkansas Pine-Bluff is 59 for 60 this season from the free-throw line.

DePaul fired head coach Tony Stubblefield. The Blue Demons are 3-15 this year. 0-7 in the Big East. What’s happened to DePaul, Georgetown and Louisville?

Joel Embiid scored 70 points on 24-41 shooting Monday night lifting Philly to the 133-123 win over the Spurs. Embiid added 18 rebounds and 5 assists. He leads the league in scoring at 36.6 PPG.  The four best players in the NBA are International; Jokic, Giannis, Embiid and Luka.

Speaking of Luka, he scored 33 points, pulled down 18 rebounds and handed out 13 assists Monday night in a losing effort against the Celtics.

Kevin Durant is way out of line. He’s not considered the GOAT – here’s why. Michael Jordan was named 1st Team All-Defense 9 times. LeBron has made it 5 times. KD? Has never made first or second team all-defense.  Great scorer, but play some D my man.

Yo Emoni Bates, you gotta chill out.

Chicago State over St. Xavier of Illinois 108-58.

Storming the court may have to stop. Seth Greenberg of ESPN loves it though.

Illinois looking good. They smashed Rutgers Sunday, 86-63.

Mississippi Valley State lost Monday night to Florida A&M. They’re now 0-19.

How about Texas Longhorns head coach Rodney Terry? First he complains about UCF players celebrating after beating his team. Couple of days later, Texas wins at the buzzer and he’s running around on the court jumping up and down. Come on man.

At the opening of the Detroit Lions-Tampa Bay Bucs playoff game on Sunday, Ford Field was rocking. NBC announcer Mike Tirico said, “Scene’s too good. We’re just gonna shut up.”

Congratulations to the Lions, after their 31-23 win over Tampa Bay, they’re moving on to play the San Francisco 49ers for the NFC championship.

“10 outta 10” was watching the Lions game with me. ”Chris Collinsworth talks too much.”

NBC should’ve shown more crowd shots. Lions fans are awesome.

Happy birthday Tom Hoover. He’s 83.

EVERY POSSESSION MATTERS

Watched Bronny James Saturday afternoon against Arizona State. Not sure why the Sun Devils fans boo him. What did he do that was so bad? ”10 outta 10″ said, “That’s harsh.”

I have watched video clips of Bronny but Saturday was the first time checking him out live in a full game. I like his game, he plays the point and plays the right way.  He shares the ball. Has good vision and is a “team” guy. Sounds like his dad, huh? But the expectations this kid has to live up to is going to be almost impossible. He’ll never please everyone. Let him be a kid and hope for the best.

Casey Jacobson was on the call for Fox. He made a couple of silly statements. Not to mention him and his partner throw out way too many stats. And we don’t need a breakdown of every play.  ”Bronny James is not an NBA player right now.:” Yeah, no kidding. The young man is a freshman and has a lot of time to grow.

Here’s another: ”It’s important Kobe Johnson plays well.” WOW! They are actually paying this guy for this comment? Isn’t it important everyone plays well?

Arizona State won 82-67. USC played without their two leading scorers. Bronny finished with 7 points in 25 minutes. He shot 3-6 from the field, 1-2 from distance. James had 5 assists and 3 turnovers.  USC committed 18 turnovers. They’ve lost 4 straight.

Entering the game Arizona State had 7 tech’s the past two games. Head coach Bobby Hurley picked up a T in the first half. Hurley brings a lot of passion. Leave him alone.

Jose Perez from Arizona State is from the Bronx. ASU is his 5th stop in college. He’s been at Gardner-Webb, Marquette, Manhattan and West Virginia. Hopefully most of those credits carried over.

UCLA-Arizona was a wild game. Bruins led by 19 at one point in the first half. Wildcats were 17.5 favorite and wound up winning 77-71. Mick Cronin was T’d up in the second half.

Wildcat fans chanting, “REF YOU SUCK!” Oh no they don’t.

With :41 seconds left in the game, Bruins down 4, they chucked up 4 three-pointers. WHY? Take the ball to the rack. Get a quick deuce or possibly draw a foul. I love the 3-ball but sometimes it’s not necessary.

Bill Plaschke of the LA Times composing another piece about Mick Cronin.

Texas beat Baylor at the buzzer. Tyrese Hunter went coast-to-coast to the rack for a layup. Glad he didn’t settle for a 3.

Wake Forest over Louisville by 25, 90-65.

Tennessee over Alabama by 20, 91-71.

Creighton over Seton Hall in New Jersey, 97-94 in 3 OT’s.

How about the Villanova-UConn game? Huskies up 4, last possession for the Cats, kid hits a half-court shot at the buzzer. Huskies win by 1. What’s the big deal? UConn was favorite 3.5 – If you bet UConn, you lost.  Ex-Villanova head coach Jay Wright was at the game.  Nova shoots 81% from the FT line as a team. They lead the country.

Speaking of free-throws, Army-West Point is last in the nation, 56.8%. Yesterday in a 57-53 loss to Navy they shot 7-14.

When coming out of a timeout late in the game, why do play-by-play people ask the analyst, “Who do you go to here?” Or, “What’s the play here?” Or, “Where does (insert team) go for scoring?” And to be honest, most times the analyst is wrong.

Speaking of timeouts, let’s do away with full and :30 timeouts in high school and college. Just have full timeouts.

Detroit lost to Youngstown State 105-64. Titans are 0-20.

Mississippi Valley State lost to Bethune-Cookman, 80-64. Delta Devils are 0-18.

Pitt over Duke 80-76 in Durham. Panthers bounce back from a 22-point loss to the Blue Devils two weeks ago. Blake Hinson shot 7-7 from downtown. Duke was without two starters. It’s Pitt’s first win in Cameron since 1979.

West Virginia upsets Kansas, 91-85.

Yo Archie Miller, get off the court.

Pistons lost at home to the Bucks 141-135 despite making 21 3’s. Alec Burks in his last 4 games is shooting 21-39 from downtown. They will play again Monday night in Detroit. Damian Lillard scored 41 points and had 11 assists for the Bucks.  He was 16-16 from the free-throw line. Giannis just missed a triple-double; 31-10 and 9.

Detroit Lions play at Ford Field today against the Bucs at 3:00 PM. Winner will face the 49ers in the NFC championship. Wonder if any of the Milwaukee Bucks players will attend the game. I could see Giannis chilling on the Lions sideline.

Madison Square Garden was the place to be Saturday. First up was St. John’s vs Marquette. Toronto Raptors-Knicks at night. Carl from Brooklyn told me tickets for the SJU game started at $61. Back in the day it cost 5-8 bucks to get in. Marquette won, 73-72. Rick Pitino has brought spirit and juice to the Johnnies. But, they’ve lost 3 straight, two of the L’s were by one point. SJU shot 5-21 from distance.

It was the return of RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley to 33rd and 8th. Knicks beat the Raptors easily, 126-100. Barrett played 28 minutes and scored 20 points on 8-15 shooting including 1-3 from 3. He had 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Quickley was 4-8 for 12 points in 31 minutes with 11 assists and 2 turnovers. Raptors are 4-7 since the trade. Knicks are 9-2. My guy Joe Lee from 13th street did not like the trade.

Julius Randle had a triple-double. Entering the game he was shooting 29% from distance; Randle made 3 of 7 and has hit on 10 of his last 23.

Jalen Brunson 38 points and 9 assists for the Knicks.

Phil Mushnick of the New York Post with a good piece today. Love Pop’s quote, “If anything, it’s like a snapshot of the world we live in today. Meanness seems to be a lot more condoned. ”https://nypost.com/2024/01/20/sports/bulls-fans-booing-jerry-krauses-widow-is-revolting/

Happy birthday to Hakeem Olajuwon, Sidney Lowe, Clifford Ray and Detlef Schrempf.

I don’t know if I should purchase a Detroit Lions hoodie or Michigan Wolverines football hoodie?

Enjoy your Sunday…

KEEP GETTING BETTER

That’s the ultimate goal not only in basketball but in life.

Last night I went out to watch some high school hoops. Girls varsity played first, boys followed. After the girls game, a few of them that I have known a long time, grabbed the shooting gun and went to the practice gym to work on their shooting. This coming after they lost their game. It’s all about the work. I love hearing and seeing players work on their game.

Shooting is a part of the game that all players need to work on. Get out there and work on your shot as much as you can. Don’t worry about hiring a personal trainer, don’t worry about college scholarships, forget about the highlights on Instagram, just work on your shooting. It’s so important. Before and after practice, get up extra shots.

Here’s a quote from Michigan Wolverine, Terrance Williams: (Credit the Detroit Free Press)

Watched Illinois-Michigan Thursday night. I love Marcus Domask of Illinois. Fighting Illini won easily, 88-73. Coleman Hawkins had 21 and 10 for Illinois. Michigan shot 3-13 from distance. Terrance Williams and Dug McDaniel were a combined 0-8. 30 FTA’s for Illinois, 12 for the Wolverines. Brad Underwood’s squad killed Michigan on the glass, 38-25. Illinois had 13 offensive rebounds. Michigan has lost 6 of their last 7. (7-11, 2-5). Currently they are in last place in the Big Ten and will probably miss the NCAA tournament for a second straight year. They play at Purdue Tuesday. Illinois is now 13-4, 4-2 in league play.  Looks like Terrance Shannon will be reinstated and join the Illini. He’s missed the last 6 games due to a rape charge.

Domask made a sweet turn-around from the right baseline. Watching the replay Stephen Bardo, the announcer said, “that’s an impossible shot.” SMH

I don’t think Wolverines head coach Juwan Howard was happy about Illinois’ last shot of the game.

Grand Canyon is 17-1.

Friday night Wisconsin beat Indiana 91-79. The Badgers are 14-4 on the year, 6-1 in the Big Ten standing at the top in 1st place. Indiana is 12-7, 4-4 in league. Hoosiers had 10 turnovers and 7 assists. At one point in the second half the Badgers scored 20 straight points. Three best teams in the Big Ten are Illinois, Wisconsin and Purdue. After that, it’s anyone’s guess.

Chicago State beat East-West Friday night 131-55. Wait a minute, East-West? What’s going on here? I looked into their school. East-West University, they are a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. (NAIA) Their nickname? The Phantoms. They’re located in Chicago. Enrollment is a little under 1,000. As for the game, the Phantoms shot 1-14 from distance, Chicago State, 14-35. Wonder if Johnny Point Spread had any action on this one?

Xavier beat Georgetown 92-91.

UConn and Villanova Saturday night at 8:00 PM.

In the NBA Friday night Nuggets beat he Celtics 102-100 in Boston, giving the the Celtics their first home loss this year. They were 20-0 entering the game. Jayson Tatum had a chance to tie the game at the end and took an awful, fade-away, off-balance shot. Which for some reason he fell to the floor without getting touched. Come on JT, you gotta be stronger than that. Take the ball to the rack and get tough.

During the game Kristaps Porzingis went over the back of Nikola Jokic for an offensive rebound. Jokic went crashing to the floor. While watching the replay, Doris Burke screamed abut Porzingis being allowed to go after the ball. Clearly feeling it wasn’t over the back. To which “10 Outta 10” said to me, “she’s awful.” Jokic finished with 34 points, 12 rebounds and 9 assists. Tatum missed a layup during the game and Mark Jones, play-by-play for ESPN said he “smoked it.” How about, he missed it?

Wednesday night against the Wizards Jalen Brunson scored 41 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and dished out 8 assists. In the same game, Tyus Jones of the Wizards had 15 assists and just 1 turnover.

There’s only 4 teams in the NBA that have a chance at winning the championship. Celtics, Bucks, Nuggets and Clippers.

Enjoy the NFL playoff games this weekend. GO LIONS…

TO YOUR POINT

I asked a couple of co-workers today, “why do we worry so much about what people think of us?”

One person said, “our reputation.”

Honestly, why do we care so much about what people think of us?

It really doesn’t matter.

What matters is our character. To me, that’s more important.

Be a good person. Show up and do your job.

Watched UConn and Creighton Wednesday night. Huskies win 62-48.

Donovan Clingan made his return for UConn. He’s missed the last 5 games. 15 minutes. 6 points. 3-8 FG with 5 rebounds.

Cam Spencer of UConn has a little Scott Skiles in him.

Bill Raftery on the call for Fox, along with his partner are Captain Obvious I and Captain Obvious II.

Huskies are 16-2 on the year and ranked #1 in the nation. Creighton falls to 13-5.

Huskies shot 5-19 from distance. Blue Jays 6-26.

Creighton was 6-6 from the free-throw line. UConn 7-10.

Bronny had a decent game last night in the Trojans 15 point loss to Arizona. 30 minutes. 11 points on 5-11 shooting, 1-4 from distance. 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 turnovers. LeBron is crazy, Bronny would not start for the Lakers right now. I’m not sure why Wildcats fans were booing him when he touched the ball. Trojans are 8-10 on the season.

UCLA beat Arizona State by 2.

DePaul got crushed by Providence, 100-62.

Davidson over Fordham 79-69.

Loyola over UMass 79-78.

Detroit lost in double OT to Robert Morris, 102-99. Markeese Hastings of Robert Morris was 17-17 from the foul line. Jayden Stone of Detroit played 49 of a possible 50 minutes. Titans are 0-19. Good thing is they were +8, so they covered.

Rodney Terry, head coach at Texas was a bit mad at UCF after the Knights went into Austin and beat the Longhorns. He called them “classless,” after celebrating on the floor after the game. To me Terry is displaying sour grapes. Get your team better. Put together a better scouting report.

TCU women’s team holding open tryout for their team. They need players. Michigan State once had an open tryout for walk-ons. Mike Garland and I ran the drills. We didn’t find anyone good enough.

No charges will be filed against Josh Giddey.

Do kids still shovel the outdoor court when it snows to work on their game?

Happy birthday Cozell McQueen. He’s 62.

ASSISTS, LOOSE BALLS & TURNOVERS

Today’s notes dedicated to Stephen Wacaser.

Sad news out of the Golden State Warriors organization. Assistant coach Dejan Milojevic has passed away. He died of a heart attack. He was 46.

I don’t care about the NBA all-star game and I don’t care about “MVP” talk. But Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic went at it Tuesday night in Philly with Embiid and the Sixers pulling out the win 126-121. Embiid scored 41 points with 7 rebounds and 10 assists. Jokic had 25 points, 19 rebounds and 3 assists.

College basketball official Earl Walton (my favorite ref) is officiating his 8th game tonight in 8 days. Atta way Earl.

Penn State beat Wisconsin Tuesday night 87-83.

Purdue crushed Indiana 87-66. IU attempted 9 free-throws for the game compared to Purdue’s 27. Zack Edey 33 points and 14 rebounds.

Seton Hall over St. John’s 80-65. Rick Pitino did not coach, he tested positive for COVID.

Where’s Jon Sanderson, Michigan basketball strength and conditioning coach? He hasn’t been around the team since he got into it with head coach Juwan Howard.

Nate Oats is my guy and all but he can’t be pushing an opposing player. Refs should’ve T’d him up. Oats apologized after the game.

The Foul or the Defend situation pertains to a team being up by 3, on defense and less than :10 left in the game. The Dallas Mavericks the other night against the Pelicans fouled up by 2. It worked.

STATE OF MICHIGAN

It was a good weekend for sports teams in the State of Michigan.

Detroit Lions beat the LA Rams.

University of Michigan men’s basketball over Ohio State (Just like football)

Michigan State men’s basketball beats Rutgers.

Detroit Pistons over the Wizards.

Too bad U of D men’s basketball couldn’t get it done.They lost.They’re 0-18.

How about Carmelo Anthony’s comments about the Denver Nuggets giving Nikola Jokic #15?Give me a break Melo.Jokic is the greatest Denver Nugget of all-time.Why not be happy for the guy and the team?

Reggie Bush may be right about why Nick Saban got out of coaching but his choice of words were incorrect.

College basketball referee Earl Walton officiated Michigan-Ohio State today. It’s his 4th game in 4 days.

LaPhonso Ellis, BTN analyst needs a lot of work.He did the Rutgers-MSU game on Sunday. First off he tells us what a team should do when they have the ball. He also has a hint of favoritism in his voice. He was clearly in love with everything the Spartans were doing. ”I love the push in transition,” when talking about Michigan State.

Fox studio analyst LaVall Jordan pre-game talking Michigan-Ohio State, “They gotta make shots.”Yeah no kidding.

His co-worker in studio Mike Hill was not funny mocking Seton Hall head coach Shaheen Holloway’s New Jersey accent. Not cool Mike.

Gus Johnson and Jimmy Jackson were on the call in Ann Arbor for Wolverines-Buckeyes.Gus likes to say, “A brick” when someone misses badly. He calls Michigan point guard Dug McDaniels, “Dougie Fresh.”

Buckeyes don’t have their names on the back of their jerseys.

Towards the end of the first half Ohio State had a foul to give with :03 left failed to give a foul – gave up a 3 at the buzzer.

Buckeyes need to pull the shooting guns out tomorrow. They shot 3-25 from distance.

Jalen Rose, Chris Weber, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson were courtside. Juwan Howard completed the Fab 5.The late Bob Knight once said, “they didn’t win anything while they were at Michigan.”

Another goodie from Gus: ”Ya gotta go to class and ya gotta turn in assignments.”

Houston Cougars have lost 2 straight.

In women’s basketball South Carolina beat Kentucky 98-32.Wildcats shot 15-61 from the floor.4-18 from distance. 7 assists-24 turnovers.

Congratulations to the Detroit Lions.Big playoff win over the Rams on Sunday night.Detroit fans have waited a long time.It was cool seeing Eminem on the sidelines.

Next week Bills take on the Chiefs.Bills QB Josh Allen is dating actress Hailee Steinfeld.
