THE DOING IS THE THING

I’m sorry but we’re making too big of a deal over this Catlin Clark-Gregg Doyel thing.

Angel Reese went to the Met Gala, so what?

Travis Kelce kissed Taylor Swift, who cares?

The Boston Celtics ripped the Cleveland Cavaliers 120-95 in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. How about Cleveland fans chanting, “We want Boston, We want Boston,” in Game 7 against Orlando. No you don’t. Be careful what you wish for…

Celtics made 18 3’s.

Thunder crushed the Mavericks in Game 1 of the Western Conference Semi-Finals, 117-95.

Game 2 Eastern Conference Semi-Finals tonight between Pacers and Knicks. Knicks have lost Mitchell Robinson for 6-8 weeks. He injured his ankle in Game 1.

There was a play in Game 1 of Pacers-Knicks where OG Anunoby dove on the floor for a loose ball. I clipped it and sent it to a college coach. “First to the floor,” coach said. “Matter of fact, only one on the floor.” OG makes winning plays.

Reggie Miller is joining Stan Van Gundy and Brian Anderson for Game 2 on TNT. I really don’t want to mute the game but Miller may make me.

I had no problem with Rudy Gobert missing a basketball game for the birth of his child.

Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports has a good piece on “Inside the NBA.” https://sports.yahoo.com/please-save-inside-the-nba-170647304.html

Pat Riley is 100% correct about Jimmy Butler. “Shut up!”

Way too many gambling ads on TV.

The NIL and Transfer Portal has helped college athletics. Wonder if there is a list that is public where we can see the athletes in the Portal?

Happy birthday Speedy Claxton.

CHOICES

Every day we wake up we have a choice.

That is one fundamental in life that will never change.

The fantastic actor Chazz Palminteri once said, “the choices you make will shape your life forever.”

Disturbing story out of Lansing, Michigan. A boys high school basketball coach is in hot water. He made a poor choice.

Muhammad El-Amin, head boys basketball coach at Holt High School was arrested, facing multiple felony charges; one being child sexually abusive behavior.

He was caught in one of several child sex stings conducted by members of “multiple Lansing-area law enforcement agencies” on Thursday and Friday, a Lansing police investigator testified in a court document that led to charges being issued against the Holt coach on Friday.

Police posted an ad on an online prostitution website that couldn’t be accessed accidentally, according to the investigator. A sender later identified as El-Amin responded to the ad on Thursday, requesting that a decoy posing as a 15-year-old girl perform a sex act on him, the investigator said.

Here’s the link to the story: https://www.lansingstatejournal.com/story/news/local/2024/05/03/holt-boys-basketball-coach-muhammad-el-amin-arrested-suspended/73559311007/

I had to blog about this because lately I have been seeing many stories about this disturbing behavior; men going after underage girls. Just recently I saw a story of a guy who committed suicide because he was busted with a young girl.

What is it with these guys and the choices they make?

Do they realize they are ruining their lives? Not to mention bringing shame to their family.

I also had to blog about this because I have coached against El-Amin. I also watched him play in high school. This cat needs help. Hope he gets it.

Caitlin Clark made her WNBA debut Friday night and did not disappoint. Clark made 5 3’s in the Indiana Fever pre-season loss to the Wings, 79-76. She finished with 21 points on 5-16 shooting, 5-13 from 3. They had a sellout crowd in Dallas; without Clark, that just doesn’t happen. She’s brought the league to a new level.

Lakers fired Darvin Ham. The second year head coach out of Saginaw, Michigan was 90-74 with the Lakers. It’s a weak move by LA. Look, it’s not Ham’s fault. I have been seeing “who should be the next coach for the Lakers” stories. They should hire LeBron James and let him be player-coach. Shit, I would coach them. Ownership would save a lot of money. Just give me $1 million per year. I got the clothes, I just need a bench to sit on. Coaching is coaching. It’s on the players to execute and perform.

Patrick Beverley’s recent behavior should not be tolerated. The league should suspend him for a ton of games. This guy just doesn’t get it. But there are people who will give him a free pass because he can dribble and shoot a basketball. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/patrick-beverly-throws-basketball-hits-152559311.html

Knicks and Pacers get underway Monday night Game 1 at MSG. Obi Toppin, former Knicks first round draft pick gets a shot at his former team.

Phil Musnick of the New York Post said John Smoltz of Fox ruins MLB with his constant blathering. Speaking of too much talking, watching Knicks-76ers the other night, why does Grant Hill have to give analysis on every play? It’s annoying.

Stephen A. Smith’s latest comment about Mike Trout was not cool.

I get an e-mail from Dunkin Donuts saying all iced drinks are $2 until May 8. I step to the counter this morning, scan and have to pay $3.70. Girl says it doesn’t work. Come on man…

Happy birthday Dawn Staley; she’s 54.

Always play the right way…

MARGINAL CONTACT

Before any mention of basketball, how about the NFL draft? Thursday and Friday night Detroit was rockin’. Nick Saban has been awesome giving his analysis.

The Indiana Pacers were in a foul or defend twice Friday night against the Milwaukee Bucks in Game 3 of their first round match-up. Both times Indiana decided to defend and gave up a game-tying 3. Pacers won in OT, 121-118.

Caitlin Clark signed a huge deal with Nike and will have a signature shoe.

Knicks are up 2-1 on the 76ers – but there’s too much drama going on in the series. Game 4 is tonight.

Denver Nuggets on the verge of sweeping the Lakers. Too much pouting by LA. And what was up with D’Angelo Russell not joining his teammates in the huddle? He was sitting alone at the end of the bench.

In game 3 of Nuggets-Lakers, the two teams shot a combined 10 for 55. Nuggets 5-27, Lakers 5-28. If you struggle with Math, that’s 18%.

Gary Payton was fired from his head coaching job at Lincoln University.

The Brooklyn Nets have hired Juwan Howard as an assistant coach.

Happy birthday to George Gervin. The Iceman is 72.

THE HATE THEY GIVE

Tonight is the W.N.B.A. draft live from Brooklyn, New York.

7:30 PM on ESPN.

For the first time in my life I will tune in.

I’m only watching for one reason; Caitlin Clark.

With the first pick of the 2024 WNBA draft, the Indiana Fever select, Caitlin Clark of the University of Iowa.

Christine Brennan of the USA Today wrote a piece about Clark and the haters she has attracted. In the article she quotes a couple of WNBA players.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/columnist/brennan/2024/04/15/wnba-caitlin-clark-veteran-players-cold-taurasi-stewart/73323868007

Where does all this negative talk come from?

Jealousy. Envy. Animosity.

Why can’t these pro players be happy for Clark’s success?

In sports when someone does well society wants to knock them down. I don’t understand that mindset.

Clark, the greatest women’s college basketball of all-time has lifted the women’s game to tremendous heights. People are watching because of her.

Always play the right way…

FIRST TIME

With John Calipari headed to Arkansas opening up the Kentucky job, some big names in coaching being mentioned. I hope Danny Hurley stays at UConn – he’s got a good thing going. Is it me or did the Calipari news overshadow UConn winning it all? Last team to win 3 straight titles was UCLA (1971-73).

Bucks and Celtics Tuesday night had two total free-throws attempted the entire game…by both clubs. That’s incredible. Bucks shot 1-2, Celtics didn’t shoot any. Which has never happened before. There were 88 3’s taken. Bucks won 104-91.

Travel basketball at the youth level is about to get underway.

I’m not big into TV ratings but…the women’s NCAA championship game had more viewers than the men’s NCAA championship game. I watched them both.

What is up with the hate towards Caitlin Clark? What did she do wrong? All she does is play the right way, win and break records. We live in a mean, cruel world. Lot of people out there are phony.

Always play the right way…

3-ON-3

Three quick hitters: hoop thoughts regarding the greatest sport in the world

1-John Calipari to Arkansas: Not surprising Coach Cal gets out of Lexington and is headed to Arkansas. Cal’s record at Kentucky in 15 years was 410-122. He won 75% of his games and Wildcat fans were upset with him. Many names being mentioned to replace him.

2-Caitlin Clark: I have written about her a lot these last few weeks. I love her game. How can you not? She’s easily the women’s greatest college basketball player ever. I don’t care what the haters say. And why so much hate on someone who has lifted the women’s game and plays the right way? BTW, the championship game on Sunday against South Carolina broke another record of viewers; 18.7 million tuned in. That’s the third straight game the record has been broken. And it’s because of one player; Caitlin Clark.

3-UConn-Purdue tonight in the men’s NCAA championship. 9:20 jump-ball. Going to be a late night for me. It’s going to be a good one. I hope the officials allow them to play, especially Zach Edey and Donovan Clingan in the post. Huskies are -6.5…

Always play the right way…

SOUTH CAROLINA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Congratulations to the Gamecocks. They are your 2024 NCAA National Champions. On Sunday they took care of business and beat Iowa 87-75. SC finish an incredible season with a record of 38-0. In the past three seasons they are 109-3.

The Hawkeyes jumped out to a 10-0 lead and increased it to 13-2. But SC was not going to back down. They turned up the heat defensively and crashed the boards to take control of the game.

South Carolina’s bench outscored Iowa’s 37-0. Don’t think I have ever seen that before.

Tessa Johnson led the way for SC with 19 points.

Kamilla Cardoso scored 15 points for SC and pulled down 17 rebounds.

South Carolina won the rebounding battle, 51-29.

Caitlin Clark scored 30 points on 10-28 shooting. Clark knocked down 5 3’s.

Men’s finals tonight – Purdue and UConn.

Always play the right way…

DO YOUR JOB

General George S. Patton once said, “do more than is required of you.” Last night in one women’s final four game, Iowa and UConn, it wasn’t just Caitlin Clark versus Paige Bueckers. No sir. There were other players from both teams stepping up and contributing. The Hawkeyes managed to win 71-69 and advance to the championship game Sunday against South Carolina at 3:00 pm. The Gamecocks beat NC State easily, 78-59. Dawn Staley’s crew is 37-0.

Hannah Stuelke led the way for Iowa with 23 points on 9-12 shooting. Steulke picked up the slack when Clark struggled from the floor. Kate Martin and Gabby Marshall also stepped up their game helping Iowa defeat the Huskies.

Martin scored 11 points and had 8 rebounds. Marshall wasn’t that good on offense (2-9 FG, 1-7 from 3) but she did a good job guarding Bueckers.

As for the GOAT, she scored 21 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and dished out 7 assists. 7-18 from the floor, 3-11 from deep. She’s scored 20 or more points in 48 straight games.

Bueckers and Aaliyah Edwards each scored 17 points for UConn.

I thought the illegal screen called on Edwards on UConn’s last possession was awful. Huskies had the ball down one. Edwards set a screen on the right wing and was called for moving with 3.9 seconds left. Bad call.

Geno Auriemma was coaching in his 23rd final four. That’s incredible. He’s won 11 National Championships.

Right off the bat ESPN made a big mistake. Instead of watching and listening to the player introductions, we had to listen to three awful announcers talk about nonsense.

The average ticket price last night was $413.

How many times did ESPN announcer Rebecca Lobo say “elite?” Everything to her was elite. SMH

Hawkeyes had 8 turnovers in the first quarter. 12 at the half. They finished with 16.

Iowa was -2.5

Love this quote from Kate Martin after the game:

NUMBERS

The greatest weekend in all of sports is here.

Let’s face it, there’s not a better sport in the world than basketball.

Tonight starts the women’s college basketball Final Four in Clevland, Ohio.

South Carolina vs NC State…followed by UConn-Iowa.

The Gamecocks are 36-0. How about this? In their last 110 games they are 107-3.

That’s incredible. Their L’s have been by 1, 2 and 4 points.

Tickets for the games are going for $2,000. WOW!

Television ratings are up. Iowa-LSU last weekend in the Elite 8 averaged 12.3 million viewers, the most-watched women’s college basketball game ever. It was also the most-watched college basketball game in ESPN’s history.

In her college career, Caitlin Clark has played 137 games for Iowa. Here’s her numbers:

28.5 PPG, 7.1 RPG and 8.3 APG.

Clark has had 6 triple-doubles this season. The most by any player in the country.

Paige Bueckers from UConn, who happens to be an outstanding player put up these numbers in her career:

84 games, 19.8 PPG, 4.8 RPG, and 4.5 APG.

Enjoy the games and always play the right way…

START OVER. DO BETTER

We’re one day away from the women’s Final Four. Can’t wait for North Carolina State-South Carolina and UConn-Iowa. Things get underway in Cleveland at 7:00 PM.

Can we please stop with all the nonsense. I’m talking Caitlin Clark. The lady is the greatest women’s college basketball player of all-time. Notice I said “college.”

I don’t care what anyone says. There’s no comparison. Just look at the numbers please. Because that’s what it all comes down to when comparing great players.

Clark is the all-time leading scorer in women’s college basketball and 4th all-time in assists. She’s the Big Ten’s all-time assists leader. You can’t find that anywhere except for LeBron James. (Many people think LBJ is the greatest of all-time.)

If you know basketball, you understand how hard it is to be the leading scorer and leader in assists. Just ask Nate Archibald.

When discussing basketball, why does it have to come down to race? Who cares if the player is white, black, Puerto Rican, Euro, Asian or Jewish. Can’t we just enjoy these individuals?

Basketball should bring people together – not separate us.

Many people have been watching women’s college basketball as of late, people who normally don’t watch the ladies game…and it’s because of Caitlin Clark. She’s lifted the women’s game to an incredible height. Just look at how much tickets are going for this weekend at the Final Four

Always play the right way…
