RIP TEX WINTER

Sad news in the basketball world.  The Guru of the Triangle offense passed away on Wednesday.  He was 96.

“Basketball and teaching was his calling.”

– Phil Jackson on Tex Winter

Tex once famously asked beseechingly why, “If an English teacher takes a student home for dinner, he’s a humanitarian. If a basketball coach does, he’s a crook.”

TALKIN’ ‘BOUT MY GENERATION

Via Phil Jackson:

“Today’s players simply lack the skills to play the triangle. They know  how to play one-on-one, catch-and-shoot, and they’ve mastered crossover  dribbles, spins, playing off of screens and step-back shots. They don’t  know how to execute things like inside-reverse pivots and other basic  footwork. They have no sense of timing or organization. They don’t  really know how to play five-on-five basketball. It’s strictly  generational.”

PHIL JACKSON

“You do need great players to win the championship, but having to always chase the best talent in free agency eventually becomes a mind-set of, well, the best talent wins as opposed to who plays the best team basketball. We’re not going to punch all the right buttons in the process of doing this. But we’re looking for multiple talents, drive, intelligence, guys that will play defense.”
