Interesting quote I came across a few days ago; “LeBron and Wade are the same player, that’s why they can’t win.” I don’t recall who said it, but it made me laugh out loud.

But here’s a better one, a coach tweeted me and said they ARE the same type of players from the standpoint they both need the ball in their hands.

Yeah, of course, isn’t that the object of basketball with most superstars? Matter of fact, most great teams have multiple guys who ‘need the ball’.

Day 81: The Need for the Ball

Sure you need the ball to score, but there are other things you can do to help your team and LeBron has been doing them for the past 7 years.

He passes the ball, rebounds and blocks shots.

Wade is a scorer; whether it’s on the wing catching and attacking or going off the dribble.

The need for the ball with multiple players is not the problem with teams who struggle.  The problem is bigger than that.  If your shot is off, take it to the basket. If you are not scoring, get down in your stance and play lock-down defense.  Run the floor faster, share the ball more and play with a lot more energy.

Doesn’t matter if you have the ball or not, there’s a lot you can do when you’re on the floor.

  1. Apparently there is a lot more to this story. Lebron being brought up in the entitlement atmosphere of high level AAU and being babied by HS coaches and never having played for a stern taskmaster in college are coming back. This is not over and I am really interested in how this plays out because there is a teachable moment in there somewhere.

  2. Coach,

Good call. We are battling a serious fight in the game of basketball, that’s for sure.
