WAS THAT A FOUL OR DEFEND?

No matter who you talk to or listen to, everyone has an opinion on the late game situation; up three points, on defense, and less than :07 to play.

Last night in the MSU-Indiana game the Hoosiers were up three, on defense with less than seven seconds to play in the game. Spartans guard Gary Harris pulled up for a possible game tying three-point shot from the left-wing.

Will Sheehey, the Hoosier defender put his hands straight up. The refs thought he fouled the shooter; a foul was called with 3.7 seconds left on the clock. Three shots for Harris.

Now, where do I chart that?

Under the “foul” category?

Defend category?

Or leave it alone?

Harris missed the first, made the second then had to miss the third on purpose.

Victor Oladipo of the Hoosiers secured the rebound, was fouled and made two free-throws at the other end, game over.

Last night we had four foul or defend situations in college and the NBA.

The Milwaukee Bucks led the Brooklyn Nets and had a decision to make. They elected to defend, Joe Johnson banged a three and the Nets went on to win in OT.

College:

-Longwood fouled Liberty and came away with the win.

-Missouri, who I thought was a foul team defended Florida. The Gators got a clean look from the corner but missed.

-Neveda up three on Fresno State decided to defend but gave up a three-point shot to Kevin Foster with 6 seconds left. In the extra session the Bulldogs won.

Overall stats: (As of 2/19/13

Division One Games:

363 situations

25 fouled – 23 won

338 defended

56 made three’s

16%

NBA:

79 situations

10 fouled – 10 won

69 defended

16 made three’s

23%

FINAL FOUR WEEKEND

The three greatest weeks of sports in America is coming to an end.

Three weeks ago I filled out a bracket for the men’s NCAA basketball tournament. I was able to pick 2 of the 4 Final Four participants.

Baylor and Missouri let me down.

I had Kansas and Missouri in the finals with the Jayhawks winning it all.

This weekend I think Kentucky will be playing Ohio State in the finals and I’ll go with Kentucky.

The Final Four is a great weekend. Coaches from all over the country meet up to have a ton of fun. There are coaching clinics, great food and of course 3 outstanding games.

I have been to a few Final Four’s over the years and have had a blast. I highly recommend attending in the future.

Pete Thamel of the New York Times on Thad Matta of Ohio State.

Howard Beck of the New York Times on Mike Woodson, the NY Knicks coach doing a great job.

Andy Gardiner of USA Today on Baylor’s womens coach Kim Mulkey. Here’s Nancy Kerchavel of Bloomberg News Mulkey who has been diagnosed with ‘Bell’s Palsy’.

Bob Raissman of the New York Daily News on John Calipari and Rick Pitino and the coverage they receive from the media.

Steve Kroner of the SF Gate on the 3-point shot.

Ted Lewis of Nola.com on college basketball one and done’s.

But nobody, it seems, can come up with a plan that might be an incentive for remaining in college, even though Emmert has labeled some of the one-and-doners “young men … who have little or no interest in going to college.”

SUNDAY’S SHOOT-AROUND

I watched a ton of college basketball on Saturday; 12 hours worth.  Not to mention highlights from many other games not included in my cable subscription.

Yes, I’m a junkie.

I need my fix.

I love this game.

This is a great time of year if you’re a basketball fan.

The first game started in the morning, 11:30 to be exact; how great is that? Memphis and Marshall in the Conference USA finals. The Tigers ran away with this one 83-57; their second straight Conference USA tournament championship.

Geoff Calkins of the Commercial Appeal on Josh Pastner’s crew that have really come together this season. They have won 20 of their last 23 games.

CBS went a little “ESPN-ish” on us yesterday during the game. They tracked ‘Demonstrative Reactions’ between Pastner and Marshall head coach Tommy Herrion. Come on CBS, no reason for this nonsense. Every coach has their own personality.

With the way the Tigers were running the lanes yesterday and all the breakaway dunks they threw down, Memphis reminded me of the University of Houston from back in the early 80′s when they squared off with Louisville in the NCAA tournament.

Second game was Michigan State and Wisconsin in a Big Ten semi-final game in Indy.

Joe Rexrode of the Lansing State Journal on the Spartans third straight win this year over the Badgers.

Third game of the day was the other Big Ten semi-final, Ohio State and Michigan.

Mark Snyder of the Detroit Free Press on OSU’s 77-55 win over the Wolverines.

There was an official in the game who is also an NFL referee, Gene Steratore. Steve Kerr, CBS analyst made it a point to note Gene’s impressive physique. Dude’s in great shape.

Spartans and Buckeyes for the Big Ten conference tournament championship today. The teams split this season; both winning on the road.

Jeff Mills of the News and Record on Florida State’s win over Duke yesterday to advance to the ACC finals today against North Carolina.

The Columbia Missourian on Missouri and Baylor; which was an all-out up and down game. These cats were flying downhill making plays all night. Bob Knight was on the call for ESPN He came up with some great stuff. Loved the shot of him licking an ice cream cone during the game. Knight had some solid defensive nuggets too for all the young players out there; ”The brain can’t handle the mistakes the hands make on defense.”

Howie Stalwick of the Olympian.com on the Colorado Buffalos, who the media picked to finish tied for 10th in the pre-season. Tad Boyle’s team beat Arizona yesterday in the Pac 12 conference tournament. The Buffalos won 4 games in 4 days to reserve their spot in the big dance for the first time since 2003.

Tom Withers of the AP on Ohio U and Akron; they squared off in Cleveland last night in the MAC Championship. John Groce, head coach at OU is a good guy. The Bobcats pulled it out. Groce, a math major from Taylor University went with the numbers in this one at the end of the game; up 3 he decided to foul while on defense, it worked.  Bob Wischusen play-by-play guy for ESPN worked the game…dude does a solid job but he needs to brush up on his CAA and America East member schools.

USA Today on Pat Knight at Lamar; they won their 1st Southland title since 2000; Knight’s team finished 6-0 after his press conference rant.

Cesar Davilla of the New Mexico Daily Lobo on Steve Alford and his Lobo’s. – Alford’s team beat San Diego State yesterday to capture the Mountain West Conference tournament.

Then we had Louisville and Cincinnati from Madison Square Garden.

Jim O’Connoll of the AP on the game and a classic line I heard last night from Jay Bilas of ESPN who was working the game, ”Move the ball from one side of the floor to the other, you have a better chance to score…”

From a friend on Twitter about the game; @ktorch14: Good news…I fell asleep during that awful #BigEast Champ game. Bad news…its 4am and now I’m wide awake.

Patch.com on the Nightcap; UCSB and Long Beach State. Dan Monson has done a great job in Snoop’s old stomping grounds. At one point the game was wild…on one sequence guys were not getting back on defense, barely making it past half-court. But an entertaining game no less. Kudos to Jeff Goodman. In his pre-season preview for the Sporting News he had Long Beach and UCSB 1-2 in the conference.

Great move by ESPN having Fran Fraschilla in-studio breaking down games. Speaking of in-studio guys, Dan Dakich said Baylor is the most talented team in the country. Has he not seen Kentucky this year?

‘TIS THE SEASON…

Sharing is an invisible trait with many people.

Selfish attitudes are still on display in the sport of basketball.

Coaches, for one are guilty of this disturbing habit.

Are you for your entire program or are you for yourself?

Do you lend a hand?

Do you share the ball?

Will you take a charge for your team?

Will you give up gym time to help someone else?

What have you done lately for the game of basketball?

Sharing is caring, never forget that.

Indy Star with their college round-up from last night. Missouri moves to 12-0 with win over Illinois.

Washington Post on Georgetown who beat Memphis last night for the second time this season.

Steve Irvine of the Birmingham News on UAB taking care of their APR.

Mark Blaudschun of the Boston Globe with his college basketball notes.

Jerry Tipton of the Lexington Herald-Leader with notes from Kentucky-Loyola (MD). Jimmy Patsos, head coach of Loyola with his thoughts on Kentucky.

For Loyola Coach Jimmy Patsos, Kentucky passed the eye test Thursday.”Sometimes you see a top-10 team, and say, No,” Patsos said after UK beat his team 87-63. “I say, Yes.”They’re a final-eight team,” Patsos added of Kentucky. “After that, it’s luck.”Patsos expected Kentucky to be good. The Cats entered the game ranked No. 3 in the nation. But UK was even better than anticipated.”They’re longer in person,” the Loyola coach said. “I almost got hit in the head when he blocked one of my kid’s shots.”

Joe Rexrode of the Lansing State Journal on Michigan State’s win over Lehigh.

Jeff Wagenheim of the Boston Globe on UMass’ win over Davidson. The Minutemen are 10-3.

Syracuse moved to 13-0 with their won over Tulane last night.

Indiana moved to 12-0 with their win over UMBC.

Long Beach State beat Xavier last night 68-58. It’s Xavier’s second straight loss following their brawl.

UConn is 10-1 with their 79-71 win over Fairfield but now their head coach will miss the next 3 games due to NCAA recruiting violations.

Big game tonight involving Baylor and West Virginia.
