THE TRUTH, RUTH!

Doc Rivers on his team after a home loss to the Brooklyn Nets:

“We’re a soft team right now. We don’t have any toughness. That (fight) stuff is not toughness.”

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

“I think our guys learned tonight that nobody is going to be intimidated by you just because you’re 19th in the country, you’re feeling good about yourself and you’re playing in front of a great home crowd. Doesn’t mean jack unless you bring it, and we didn’t bring it from the get-go and that’s my fault as a coach.” –Tad Boyle

WORD ACCORDING TO TEX

Coaching thoughts from Tex Winter courtesy of Pat Williams’ ‘The Ultimate Coaching Clinic’.

1-Find your niche and become a specialist. Become known for something special. Specialists are valuable.

2-Work hard and keep your nose to the grindstone.

3-Keep abreast of things. Stay current on computer skills and other technology.

4-Have a mentor to seek advice from.

WORD ACCORDING TO POP

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich:

1-Hiring the right staff is most important. You want to hire qualified people, not buddies. Its great if those qualities coincide but it’s not necessary.

2-Your staff must have a work ethic that matches yours.

3-Your staff must show loyalty to the program and the vision you have. It helps to hire varied personalities.

4-Develop relationships with your players.

5-Be honest and straightforward.

6-Show that you care.

7-Tell people what you want.

8-Establish a system everyone can believe in and that you can teach and feel confident about.

9-Make things clear to people; including principles and standards you have set and expect to be followed clear to everyone.
