“We have one of the strangest professions in that they pay us a lot of money and don’t want us to work,” said Michigan State coach Tom Izzo, who was told of the legislation Monday. “I think kids want to work. If they’re not working, they’re doing things maybe they shouldn’t be. Why not be able to talk to them? Why not be able to spend time with them where they can see another side of you?
“It’s very important for coaches, but it’s even more important for players.”

“He’s the only leader on the team—he is the leader of this team. He is the only vocal leader. He is a guy who will make plays and is not afraid to make plays—good plays. When he shoots the ball well he is one of the best point guards in the league, if not the best point guard in the league. He would lead the league in assists if he was playing the minutes that the other point guards are playing. He is playing 20 minutes a game—but he is as good as anybody and he shoots the ball well.”

“I don’t text, period,” Wittenberg men’s basketball coach Bill Brown said. “I’ve sent one text in my life. It was on the evening we got home from taking our oldest son to college. My wife wondered why it took me so long, and it’s because I’ve got an old-school phone, and there’s like six letters on one number.”
Ryan Fagan of the Sporting News on the Education of Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving.
“I think he’s developing into a floor leader, and I think that’s going to take time,” Cleveland coach Byron Scott says. “The way he finishes around the basket is pretty impressive. The way he uses the goal as another defender, the way he reads the pick-and-rolls has been great. He still has a lot of room to grow, and I think he knows that. We’re pushing him to get better, but he’s definitely heading in the right direction.”

“I’m going to continue to coach the same way, and we’re going to keep working, improving, and battling, and fighting until we’re up by 40.”
