REACHING OUT

Do you, as a coach, help guys in the profession?

Do you reach out to others to see if they need help with anything?

Tony Robbins once said, “The quality of your life is the quality of your relationships.”

The University of Michigan’s John Beilein allows high school and small college coaching staffs attend practice and workouts – now that’s helping someone!  Other schools do it also.  Michigan State and Notre Dame also allow you to observe.  All you do is call the basketball office to arrange it.

You often hear about visitors attending practices – mainly coaches.  You try and strike up a relationship with the staff or you are there to learn.  Reporters like to mention,  ‘So and so stopped by practice to observe’.

I think it’s a great call to allow others attend your practice.  The late Al McGuire use to allow coach’s attend his practice at Marquette – he even allowed coach’s from schools he was scheduled to play that same season!

I enjoy talking with others about offense, defense, academics, discipline and workouts.  I feel listening to what others do and then instilling it in your scheme helps everyone.

There are also some schools that write up coaching newsletters and send them out in attachments via e-mail.  Sean Miller at Xavier does a great job with this.  What a great tool to help others.

There are a lot of excellent guys out there willing to reach out to help.  Don’t isolate yourself – share what you have!
