NEW YORK STATE OF MIND

I always like getting into a conversation with my good friend Herb Welling about coaching.  I always remind him that New York produces some great ones.  For instance, in basketball Pat Riley, Red Holzman, Red Auerbach, Lenny Wilkins, Larry Brown,  the late Al McGuire,  Doug Moe, and Billy Cunningham all born in New York. (That’s just off the top of my head)

In football, the late Vince Lombardi grew up in Sheepshead Bay.  In baseball, Joe Torre and Gil Hodges also were born in New York.

Something must be in the water.

The New York Knicks, one of the best organizations in all of sports have just hired Mike D’Antoni.  The Knicks fans have been through a lot of tough times the past few years, they are starving for a winner.

D’Antoni is their man.  The New York Newsday with a piece on the newest Knickerbocker.

    HoopsCoach,

I have been trying to find contact information (email or phone) for Herb Welling, without any success. I am a volunteer head coach for the San Juan Diego Catholic High School Boy’s basketball team. We are a high school with a very small athletic budget and without a basketball gym. We rent space twice a week during the season for practices. I would like to pick Coach Wellings brain and get some advice for the upcoming season. It’s never a good thing when the coach is the tallest person on the team (6’1″), so I can use his insight.

This is an inner-city private school in Austin, Texas, where all the kids (predominantly Hispanic) are on scholarship through an innovative Corporate Internship Program. The kids complete 5 days of school work in 4 days and on the 5th day they work 8 hours at the business (Dell, law firms, Seton Hospital, etc) that sponsors their scholarship. Please forward this to Coach Welling, if you aren’t comfortable sending me his contact information. Thanks.

    Coach Richard

    Rich,

Ok I wil do my best – keep up the good work. Remember, size doesn’t matter, you can get them to play hard, compete and not complain and you’ll be ok.
