WHO’S WHO?

More of the coaches from the NC2 A tournament…

Winthrop -  Randy Peele. This is Peele’s first season as head coach at Winthrop after serving as an assistant for four years under former head coach Greg Marshall.  Roanoke.com has gives us a taste.

Oklahoma – Jeff Capel.  Former Duke player. Brings energy and passion.   Dad was a coach. Washington Post checks in.

“Last year was probably a difficult year for all of us,” Capel said. “For them and for me, just trying to get guys to understand, to get guys on the same page and to get guys to buy in. We have more depth this year. These guys have done a good job, and fortunately, we still have more left.”

Saint Joseph’s – Phil Martelli.  Another one of the good guys in the coaching business.  Philadelphia Daily News on his friendship with Temple’s Fran Dunphy.

“To me, it’s beyond respect,” he said. “It is a deep friendship that we have. It’s unusual. I’m sure there’s a part of him that feels for me. There’s a part of me that, well, you know what, I’m glad it was him. I have a lot of respect for the guys in the Atlantic 10, but they’re acquaintances. This is a close friend, and he and his family are deserving of enjoying a championship.”

Rick Pitino – LouisvilleMike DeCourcy from the Sporting News on Pitino.  Does he bust out the white suit?

“He brings it back to what got you here. It isn’t playing for yourself, jacking up shots,” says forward Terrence Williams, the man they call T-Will. “What got you here is being a team player and wanting to win. When you win, you go a lot farther as an individual than you do by losing.”

Boise State – Greg Graham. Graham is in his sixth season.   I know it’s hoops and all and the Broncos have done a great job this season but when I think of Boise State the first thing that comes to mind is their victory over Oklahoma in football! KBCI CBS 2 says there is excitement over the basketball team’s success.

Butler – Brad Stevens.  I remember when he was a volunteer assistant at Butler under Thad Matta.  Has done a great job in his first year as head coach. Once again, another outstanding person.   Dawgnet.com has a good story.

“I didn’t play for one person that didn’t affect me in some way this year, and I try to utilize that with our own team,” he said. “I do watch a ton of basketball to get ideas.”
